FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Boyce Johnson, who operates a family farm near Marion, was elected president of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences Alumni Society board of directors for 2012-2014. He received a B.S. degree in agriculture in 1982 as an animal science major at the University of Arkansas.
"Agriculture has been on both sides of my family for well over a generation," Johnson said. "My father’s parents moved to Crittenden County in the 1920s, and his mother, Annie Laurie Jones, received a two-year teaching certificate from the University of Arkansas in 1915."
Johnson said he has enjoyed meeting alumni from across Arkansas and the United States during his eight years as a board member. "Two characteristics that I have noticed are the caliber of a Bumpers graduate and the 'can do' attitude," he said. "When I first came onto the board, Charlene Reed (past president) told me that I would not find a more passionate group. She was correct."
Johnson and other board members on April 17 delivered 200 pounds of rice donated by Riceland Foods in Stuttgart and Stimson's Big Star in West Memphis, along with their own donations, to the Full Circle Food Pantry, which is a student-run emergency food assistance program for all members of the University of Arkansas community.
The board sponsored a Senior Celebration and Tailgate Party April 17 for Bumpers College seniors, which included tickets to a Razorbacks baseball game in Baum Stadium.
