World Food Day teleconference to focus on hunger causes and solutions

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- The public is invited to a World Food Day teleconference from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14, at the University of Arkansas Continuing Education Center, Room 107, at 2 East Center Street.
The program, coordinated locally by the UA Department of Food Science, is titled, "Reflections on Fighting Hunger: Roads Not Taken, Goals Not Met, The Journey Ahead."
Frances Moore Lappe, author of "Diet for a Small Planet" and founder of the Food First Institute and the Small Planet Institute, will speak at 11 a.m. on human-made causes of hunger.
The morning session will include live broadcast of the World Food Prize ceremonies and commentary by Dr. Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
"Silent Killer," a film on global hunger problems and solutions, will be shown from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
The third hour will be an interactive discussion with audience members invited to ask questions of Frances Moore Lappe and panel members from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
UA Food Science Department Head Ron Buescher said the teleconference marks the 60th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
The U.S. World Food Day Committee, composed of 450 non-profit organizations, sponsors the telecast, which will reach more than 1,000 sites worldwide.
Members of the American Dietetic Association, American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Marywood School of Social Work are eligible for academic credit for attending the teleconference.
