Cattle conference at SWREC will focus on profitability

HOPE, Ark. – Beef cattle producers are invited to a Cattle Grower’s Conference March 17 at the Southwest Research and Extension Center (SWREC) at Hope.

Paul Beck, assistant professor of animal science with the University of Arkansas System’s Division of Agriculture, said the conference will focus on topics to help producers increase profitability.

Following registration at 10 a.m., attendees will tour SWREC locations where research is being conducted on by-products feed ingredients and feedlot operation, use of ultrasound measurement to evaluate herd genetics, and pasture research.

After lunch, presentations will include the topics of “Forage Management for Calves,” by Beck, who is based at SWREC; “Calf Management and Carcass Quality,” by Shane Gadberry and Brett Barham, both assistant professors with the Cooperative Extension Service; “Market Outlook for 2009,” by Stan Bevers, professor and extension economist with the Texas Agricultural Service; and “Using Post-Mortem Examinations to Improve Herd Health,” by Dan Scruggs, a veterinarian with Pfizer Animal Health.

The program will conclude following the post-mortem demonstration by Scruggs, which is to begin at 3:30 p.m. Cost for the program is $20, which includes a printed proceedings, snacks and lunch. For more information contact the SWREC office at 870-777-9702.
