BATESVILLE, Ark. -- The University of Arkansas System's Division of Agriculture will hold its annual Livestock and Forestry Field Day April 15 at its research branch station near Batesville.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. Touring and presentations will begin at 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be provided. There is no registration fee or pre-registration required.

The wide-ranging program includes the latest updates on managing woodlands, improving wild turkey habitats and research comparing novel endophyte fescue to endophyte infected fescue.

The morning session will cover forestry projects and research. Hal Liechty, professor – forest hydrology and ecology, will discuss using chicken litter to fertilize pine seedlings and managing woodlands with best management practices for water quality. Kyle Cunningham, extension forester, will follow up with a discussion on carbon sequestration and carbon credits.

Tamara Walkingstick, extension forester, will talk about forest biomass, how to improve it and manage it now and for the future. Mike Widner of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will talk about providing and improving habitat for wild turkeys. George Rheinhardt of the Natural Resources Conservation Service will finish up the morning program with an update on cost-share programs for landowners.

After lunch, UA animal scientist Ken Coffey will discuss the production results of his cow-calf study comparing novel endophyte (ArkPlus) fescue to endophyte infected (Ky31) fescue. Animal scientist Paul Beck will provide more information on feeding by-product feeds to stocker cattle.

Extension specialist John Jennings will make a presentation on using legumes for nitrogen sources and efficiencies for forage production. Animal scientist Dirk Phillipp will discuss over-seeding legumes into bermudagrass sod.
