FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - William Huff, a microbiologist with the USDA Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit was elected a Fellow of the Poultry Science Association at its annual meeting in Edmonton, Canada, in July.
Huff, who is an adjunct member of the University of Arkansas department of poultry science, is a research scientist who focuses on therapeutic use of bacteriophages (beneficial viruses that infect bacteria) to reduce bacterial pathogens in poultry.
He was the first administrator of the Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit when it was established in 1992 as a USDA Agricultural Research Service unit linked to the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture’s Center of Excellence for Poultry Science.
Huff came to Fayetteville from College Station, Texas, where he was leader of a USDA mycotoxicology research unit. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from North Carolina State University.
In 2005, Huff was awarded the Broiler Research Award by the Southern Poultry Science Society. He is currently second vice president of the Poultry Science Society.
