FARMINGTON, Ark. - Thirty teams netted just over $18,000 for scholarships during the Eighth Annual University of Arkansas Poultry Science Scholarship Golf Tournament Apr. 24 at the Valley View Golf and Country Club in Farmington.
Format for the tournament was a four-person scramble with a shotgun start. An awards presentation was held in the clubhouse immediately following conclusion of play for each flight.
First place winners in the morning flight were Rex Johns, Tom Neal, Kerry Preslar and Jerry Reeves with a score of 60. Second place winners were Marvin Childers, Vic Smith, Mark Sullivan and Ben Thompson with a score of 60 (ties were determined by scorecard playoff). Third place winners were Steve Dixon, Mark Penzo, Jamie Stadler and Toby Tapp, with a score of 61.
The afternoon play had to be called after 10 holes because of lightning and weather. Scores had to be tabulated in a different manner than the morning and were as follows: first place winners in the afternoon flight were Fred Barnhill, Stan Barnhill, Darryl Muldoon and Gary Murphy who were seven under par. Second place winners were Pat Dixon, Greg Flowers, Van Stane and Greg Williams, who were six under par. Third place winners were Travis Cigainero, Kurt Dobson, Travis Goodner and Randy Stroud who were also six under par.
The major sponsor for the tournament was Cobb-Vantress, Inc., and FPEC (Food Processing Equipment Company) and Marel Food Systems both provided additional funding through hole sponsorships. Arkansas Farm Bureau donated balls, towels and tees for each participant, Harps Food Stores, Inc., donated snacks for goody bags and InTents donated the use of two "hospitality" tents to use on the course.
The following companies participated in or donated to the tournament: Aerotech, Alpharma, Aviagen, Barnhill Poultry, Big Dutchman, Biomune, Cobb-Vantress, CTB (Chore-Time), Degussa, Dixon Poultry, Embrex, Farm Bureau, First Financial Bank, FPEC, General Chemical, H.J. Baker, Huvepharma, Hubbard Farms, Intervet, JBS United, Marel Food Systems, Multi-Craft Contractors, Pilgrim's Foods, Roxell, Inc. and Tyson Foods, Inc.
Since the poultry tournament started eight years ago, over $140,000 has been raised through this event for scholarships in the department.
